The Union cabinet today approved the new telecom policy, now renamed as National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) 2018, which is set to to attract over $100 billion investments and create over 40 lakh jobs in the sector by year 2022.

The draft of the policy, NDCP aims to increase penetration of high-speed broadband across the country using modern technologies like 5G and optical fibres at affordable rates.

The draft NDCP-2018 also includes provisions to adopt Optimal Pricing of Spectrum to ensure sustainable and affordable access to digital communications. High spectrum price and related charges have been main concern of telecom services segment, which has left the industry under heavy debt.

The NDCP 2018 draft has been mandated to rationalise levies such as spectrum charges to revive the debt-ridden telecom sector. Currently, the Indian telecom industry has a debt of around Rs 7.8 lakh crore.

Besides, the proposed new telecom policy seeks to provide broadband access to all with 50 megabit per second speed, besides offering and creating an ecosystem for 5G services and create 40 lakh new jobs by year 2022.

The new telecom policy will also set the platform for development of new age technologies including Internet of Things (IOT), Artificial Intelligence and future mobility in automotive sector
