United Nations Human Rights Council has adopted the draft resolution on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka without a vote. The resolution was adopted during the ongoing 57th Regular Session of the council in Geneva.

The draft resolution is sponsored by countries including the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Malawi, Montenegro, North Macedonia and the United States of America.

Earlier yesterday, Sri Lanka’s Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha Herath had told reporters that the island will continue to oppose the resolution 51/1 of the United Nations Human Rights Council and the draft resolution at the 57th session currently underway in Geneva. He added that Sri Lanka has not agreed to any resolution that extends the powers of the external evidence-collection mechanism. Mr Herath added that Sri Lanka remains committed to addressing key human rights issues, including reconciliation, through local mechanisms and will continue to engage in cooperative and meaningful discussions with the Human Rights Council and its regular human rights mechanisms.
