ULFA General Secretary Anup Chetia walked free from Guwahati jail today. TADA and Special Judicial Magistrate court earlier granted him bail in four cases. Necessary bail bond in one case has been deposited in the court following which he was released from jail.

However, he was told to cooperate with agencies during the course of investigation and not to leave the state without court permission. AIR Correspondent reports that he spent 17 years in jail in Dhaka following his arrest in Bangladesh in 1997. He was handed over to India last month.

Later, speaking to media, Anup Chetia said that he would be a part of the ongoing peace process with the Centre and assured not to take arms again. The General Secretary of the ULFA thanked the Centre and the Assam government for his release. He also thanked the Bangladesh government for his deportation. Welcoming the release of Mr. Chetia, pro-talk ULFA leader Pradeep Gogoi hoped that his release will be helpful to expedite the peace talk with the Centre.
