ICMR has also planned to acquire patent rights for traditional healing techniques of the tribals using these rare medicinal plants.
The traditional healing techniques practiced effectively for hundreds of years by India’s most ancient Nicobarese tribe in will come in limelight soon.
According to AIR, the ICMR has already started preparing a Community Bio-diversity register to document the traditional healing practices of these tribals using indigenous medicinal plants.
This register will also contain information on mode of preparation of medicines, treatment record and number of patients treated along with the photographs of the tribal healers. The Director of Regional Medical Research Centre here, Dr P Vijayachari said the centre is collecting the information in a scientific way and will try to get patent rights for the concerned tribal healers.
So far, they have documented the use of 124 rare medicinal plants to cure 34 different diseases. This unique project is being under taken for the first time in the islands at the cost of about 38 lakh rupees.
