Telangana State Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini has said the voter turnout stood at a robust 84.28 per cent with over 45 lakh 15 thousand votes cast in the first phase of Gram Panchayat Elections held yesterday.
Of the 4 thousand 236 Gram Panchayats and 37 thousand 440 wards notified for polls, 395 Sarpanches and 9 thousand 331 Ward Members were elected unanimously, leading to polling in over 3 thousand 8 hundred GPs and 27 thousand 960 wards.
The ruling Congress-supported candidates dominated the results, securing victories in more than half of the contested villages. Opposition BRS secured victory in around 800 villages. BJP performed modestly with winning in about 150 villages.
The Second phase polling will be held on the 14th of this month, while the third and last phase will be held on the 17th of this month.
