Tamil Nadu Government has decided to reopen the state run liquor retail outlets from tomorrow. This follows the Supreme Court today staying the Madras High Court’s May 8th order to close down the liquor shops on charges of failure to follow social distancing and other safety protocols.
The apex court also has frozen the proceedings in the High Court seeking a ban on liquor sale in the state.The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited TASMAC, belonging to the Government is entrusted with the sale of alcohol in the state. It was shut down with the lockdown and was reopened on May 7. It was again closed on May 9th in accordance with the High Court directive.
Following the SC relief, the TASMAC has announced that its retail shops will be opened tomorrow throughout the state except Greater Chennai and Tiruvallur and containment zones where Covid-19 caseload is higher. The shops will be run from 10 am to 5 pm. Every day, five hundred tokens will be issued to the buyers.
