Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy has ordered the permanent closure of the Thuthukkudi Copper Smelter plant.
A state government order issued this evening has clarified that the decision has been taken considering the feelings and aspirations of the public in this matter.
In the order, it is recollected, that the National Green Tribunal as well as the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had called for a permanent closure of the plant, citing environmental and health reasons.
The order also recalls that power and water connections of the plant was suspended last Wednesday following orders of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
The anti Sterlite protests, demanding the closure of the plant last week had left 13 people dead and more than one hundred injured. Protestors said the plant was causing serious environmental hazards.
