Intensifying their protest, the Students of the Hyderabad Central University held a candle light Friday night against Rohith Vemula’s suicide.
Coinciding with Rohith’s birth anniversary today, the Student Joint Action Committee held the protest at his memorial in the university campus. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi also took part in the protest. This is Mr Gandhi’s second visit to the university after Rohith’s death.
The students are demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao and action against those who were responsible for the suicide.
Meanwhile, Police resorted to lathi-charge over another group of students led by ABVP while they were protesting against Rahul Gandhi’s visit.
In another development, Dr Vipin Srivastava, who took charge as the interim Vice-Chancellor of the University amid protests over the death, went on a 4-day leave Friday. M Periasamy of School of Chemistry will now be the acting Vice-Chancellor.
The classes in the University resumed Friday for the first time in about ten days.
