Students who are served cooked meal under the Mid Day Meal Scheme will now be required to have an Aadhaar card to avail the facility.

The government is implementing the scheme to improve nutritional status of children studying in classes from 1st to 8th in government or government aided schools or Special Training Centres or Madrasas or Maqtabs supported under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

Human Resource Development Ministry has issued a notification in this regard. The move is aimed at improving efficiency and transparency in the scheme.

The Department of School Education and Literacy has decided to give a window till 30th of June to those who do not have an Aadhaar card yet.

As per the notification, the use of Aadhaar as identity document for delivery of services or subsidies simplifies the government’s delivery process and enables beneficiaries to get their entitlements directly.

It said, the cook-cum-helpers engaged for preparing and serving midday meals are paid an honorarium and hence they will also be required to furnish Aadhaar numbers.
