In Sri Lanka, a crucial meeting of United National party (UNP) for the upcoming Parliamentary elections remained inconclusive with Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and his supporters walking out of the meeting. Mr Premadasa and few others had walked out of the Working Committee meeting last evening protesting against the proposal that elephant should be the symbol for the UNP-led alliance at the election. It was reported that Sajith supporters suggested the heart as the symbol of the alliance.
UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said, it was decided to refer the matter to an Advisory Committee and make the final decision on Friday. He said, party leader Ranil Wickremsinghe had received legal advice that the alliance should not contest under a new symbol. MP Harsha De Silva, who is also the UNP Treasurer, told reporters that several including Mr Premadasa were dejected as an opportunity to finalize matters pertaining to the alliance was lost yesterday. He said, Mr Premadasa informed party leader Wickremsinghe that there was no point in appointing him as the leader of the alliance if he was not given any power.
UNP has been divided into two camps led by Mr Wickremsinghe and Mr Premadasa since the Presidential elections last November, which Mr Premadasa lost to Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
