Mahinda Rajapaksa today resigned from the post of Prime minister. He was controversially appointed Prime minister by President Maithirpala Sirisena on 26th October suddenly replacing Mr. Ranil Wickremsinghe.

However, he failed to garner majority in Parliament and President attempt to dissolve parliament was nullified by Supreme court in a decision on Thursday.

Mr. Rajapaksa also suffered setback at the hands of a lower court which restrained him from functioning on a quo warranto petition filed by Mr. Wickremsinghe and his MPs.

Supreme Court had refused to vacate yesterday an interim order of lower court restraining Rajapaksa and his cabinet from functioning and fixed hearings in January after vacation.

Mr. Wickremsinghe will be sworn in again to the post of Prime minister tomorrow along with his cabinet. President Sirisena has claimed in the past that he would never reappoint Mr. Wickremsinghe but the political realities forced him to do so.
