The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has requested the President to revoke the proclamation declaring a state of emergency and ensure the fundamental rights of the people are protected. The Association said that the state of emergency must not be used to stifle peaceful protests and dissent or to make arbitrary arrests and detentions.

In a related development, the Ambassador of the United States to Sri Lanka Julie Chung said that she is concerned about the State of Emergency. She said, the voices of peaceful citizens need to be heard.

Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared a state of emergency last night, citing public security and the protection of public order, and for the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community. The move comes after massive protests across the island nation demanding the resignation of President Rajapaksa.
