South Korea’s National Assembly to vote today on impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol
South Korea’s National Assembly is set to vote today on an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol following his controversial martial law declaration on Tuesday.
Yoon’s decision to impose martial law, aimed at controlling political parties and the media, was lifted six hours later after being rejected by 190 lawmakers. The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) and five other parties argue that the declaration violated the Constitution.
A two-thirds majority is required to pass the impeachment motion, which could remove Yoon from office if upheld by the Constitutional Court. Yoon would be only the second South Korean president to be impeached, after Park Geun-hye in 2017.
Meanwhile, Yoon Suk Yeol has apologized to the nation in his first public comments since his abortive attempt to impose martial law.
Yoon is also facing corruption allegations involving his wife, First Lady Kim Keon Hee.
