Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla today said that some countries are leveraging their expertise in cyberspace to achieve their political and security-related objectives and indulging in cross-border terrorism.

He said, open societies have been particularly vulnerable to cyber-attacks and disinformation campaigns.

The Foreign Secretary said this in his statement at the UN Security Council Open Debate on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Cyber Security”.

He said, the world is witnessing a sophisticated use of cyberspace by terrorists around the world to broaden their appeal, spread virulent propaganda, incite hatred and violence, recruit youth and raise funds.

He added that as a victim of terrorism, India has always underlined the need for Member States to address and tackle the implications of terrorist exploitation of the cyber domain more strategically.

The Foreign Secretary said, the pervasive and boundary less nature of cyberspace implies that countries are only as strong as the weakest link in the global network.

He stressed that ‘Only together’ can the goal of a globally secure resilient cyberspace be achieved. He said, it must be ensured that no country is left behind in this collective endeavour.
