NEW DELHI: Solidarity Youth Movment , a kerala based NGO has demanded a total ban on manufacturing, sales and usage of Endosulfan. They have also decided to hold a march to the parliament on Wednesday against the use of pesiticide and. Victims of Endosulfan aerial spraying in Kasargod district of Kerala, human right activists and students would join the march.
Endosulfan is a harmful pesticide used in cashewnut plantations.
Addressing a press conference here State President of the Solidarity P Mujeeb Rahman asked the central government to enact an inclusive pesticide law based on necessary environmental conservation provisions. “Manufacturing, sales and usage of Endosulfan should be at once prohibited in India bringing up such a law”, he said demandidng a compensation and rehabilitation facilities for the victims in the area.
Rahman decried union minister K.V Thomas’ statement backing Endosulfan pesticide as humiliating the hapless victims of Endosulfan disaster. K.V Thomas earlier said that Endosulfan did not have any adverse affects in Kasargod.
The minister could just have flipped through the National Human Right Commission’s 2002 report on the aftereffects of Endosulfan usage in the district before making such senseless comments, Rahman said.
