Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, where he offered condolences to the victims of Japan’s attack on the base 75 years ago. Mr Abe was accompanied by US President Barack Obama, making the visit the first by the leaders of both countries.
Japan devastated much of the base in 1941, killing 2,300 US servicemen. The two leaders prayed for the dead but Mr Abe did not issue an apology for the attack.
Mr Obama warned against the urge to demonize those who are different as he hosted Mr Abe, for a solemn visit to Pearl Harbor. He told the Japanese Prime Minister that the character of nations is tested in war, but it is defined in peace. He said, together they want to send a message to the world that there is more to be won in peace than in war.
