Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, today expressed concern over the racial harassment faced by three young women from Arunachal Pradesh in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi.
In a social media post, Mr Schindia said that he had spoken with the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu and taken up the matter with the Commissioner of Delhi Police to seek immediate and stringent action. The Minister noted that an FIR has been registered and assured that the accused will soon be apprehended. He further said that the safety and dignity of Northeast people are paramount, and injustice against them will not be tolerated.
According to official sources, an FIR has already been registered, and the police have begun efforts to identify and apprehend the accused at the earliest. Mr. Scindia emphasized that the safety, dignity, and equal treatment of people from the Northeast must be safeguarded at all times. He asserted that any form of racial discrimination or harassment would not be tolerated and that the government remains committed to ensuring justice.
Background of Concerns
Incidents of racial harassment against individuals from Northeast India in metropolitan cities have periodically sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger sensitization and enforcement measures. Civil society groups have often highlighted the need for greater awareness and stricter implementation of laws to prevent discrimination based on physical appearance, ethnicity, or regional identity.
The latest episode in Malviya Nagar has once again brought attention to these longstanding concerns, prompting both state and central authorities to reiterate their commitment to protecting citizens from the Northeast and ensuring their safety in the national capital. Investigations are currently underway, and further details are awaited.
