Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr Harsh Vardhan has stressed that science must become a public movement in the country through promotion of achievements in various fields by Indian scientists.

Addressing the curtain raiser media conference on India International Science Festival 2020 here today, the Minister said, this will provide a platform for the dissemination of information related to science and technology. He said, this will also trigger interest in the younger generations towards science.

Highlighting the importance of science in tackling various challenges, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, scientists rose up to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. He termed the year 2020 as a science year for making beneficial steps for the humankind. Appreciating the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the scientists and building an ecosystem for development of the science and technology sector in the country, he said, Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan has played a remarkable role in making India self reliant in the health sector.

He said, Indian scientists have done instrumental works in genome sequencing, isolation and vaccine development of Covid-19 in a short span of time.

Replying to a media query, Dr Harsh Vardhan said the government is following the discovery of the new strain of coronavirus in UK and said there is no need to panic. He added that the panic so far is imaginary. The Minister also reiterated that the Central government has taken timely steps with regard to COVID-19.

Giving the details of the 6th edition of India International Science Festival (IISF) 2020, the Minister said, this will be held from 22nd to 25th of this month. He said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the event tomorrow evening. Large number of scientists and institutions from India and abroad will participate in this grand event.
