The apex court asked the Attorney General G. Vahanvati to submit the status report on the action taken by the home ministry into a complaint alleging that Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and his family members earned immense wealth during his tenure as the Chief Justice of India.

 

A bench of Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia, Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice Swatantra Kumar gave the attorney general G.Vahanvati  14 days to file the status report on the complaint against Justice Balakrishnan, who is chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)`

The court told the attorney general that a complaint was filed before President Pratibha Patil, who in turn forwarded it to the home ministry for further action.
On May 4, 2010 an Urdu journalist and social worker Dr. Muhammad Furquan, had in complaint to the President of India Pratibha Patil sought investigation by the CBI into the assets accumulated by the then Chief Justice  K.G. Balakrishnan  and his family members since he took over the Chief Justice of India.

Dr. Farquan in his complaint said that Justice Balakrishnan allegedly misused his position as   head of the country’s judiciary to dispense favours to certain people and commercial organizations at the instance of his sons, son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws.
