AMN / NEW DELHI
The Supreme Court today reiterated to the Centre that the July 31st deadline for completion of National Register of Citizens NRC for Assam will not be extended.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, criticised the Union Home Ministry for its plea seeking to stall the NRC work for two weeks keeping in mind the role of Central Armed Police Forces in election duty.
The bench asked the Election Commission (EC) to consider exempting certain state officers from election duty to ensure that NRC process continues.
The apex court had said last month also that the deadline cannot be extended. It had asked the Assam government, the NRC co-ordinator and the EC to ensure that the upcoming general elections did not slow down the process.
