The Rajya Sabha took up a discussion on the situation in Jawaharlal Nehru University and Hyderabad University. Initiating the discussion, Sitaram Yechuri of the CPIM demanded setting up of a House Committee to inquire into the incidents.
He also demanded repeal of the colonial Sedition Law and criticised the police for foisting it on students.
BJP’s Bhupender Yadav countered Yechuri’s charges, and demanded to know, if whatever has happened amounted to freedom of speech or was it speech for freedom. Yadav said, the present activities by students are not in consonance with objectives of the university.
Yadav accused the CPIM of ignoring the interests of backward classes, and alleged, the left party’s decision making body has no representation of dalits or backwards.
