cash-money-bengaluruIn the largest ever haul of old and new currency notes in Odisha after demonetisation, Sambalpur district police have seized a huge sum of around one crore forty-three lakh rupees from a car. Eight persons have also been arrested, including a liquor baron considered to be the main accused in the case. Two fire arms and ammunition were also seized from their possession.

According to Sambalpur SP Akhileswar Singh, acting on a tip-off, police searched a vehicle first and found some firearms. Further search of the vehicle led to the recovery of cash concealed in bags. During interrogation, the police came to know of the involvement of a local state bank employee and his brother.

The seized currency includes around eighty-five lakh new notes of two thousand and five hundred denominations and twenty-five lakh old currency notes. The SP said further investigation is underway and possibility of more arrests cannot be ruled out. The Income-Tax department has also been informed about the seizure.
