Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned the United States against re-imposing sanctions on Iran that were lifted under the 2015 multilateral nuclear deal.
Rouhani spoke in an interview on state television on Monday, hours before US sanctions were set to be restored.
‘Sanctions will put us under pressure but it has benefits at the same time. We will overcome them, however. I believe that if we are united, the sanctions will fail soon. If we work with each other in a united way, we will make the US regret very soon. If we manage to work with the world well and continue making endeavors, Americans will come to know that their sanctions are ineffective and they cannot be useful. Under such conditions, Americans will retreat soon,’ said the president.
He stressed that Russia, China and European countries are siding with Iran on the sanctions issue.
The Iranian leader said the decision to revive sanctions will pit the US not only against his country, but also against other countries.
He added that the US will regret imposing sanctions on Iran.
Rouhani also brushed off President Donald Trump’s call to hold talks.
Rouhani said, “if you stab someone with a knife and then you say you want talks, the first thing you have to do is to remove the knife.”
Rouhani urged the US to return to the nuclear agreement in order to develop a relationship of trust with Iran.
