At least 17 people were killed and several others injured when the roof of the gallery in Muradnagar’s crematorium ghat complex in Ghaziabad district collapsed today. According to police, the mishap happened when some people were at the crematorium to perform the last rites of their relative. NDRF team was immediately engaged in the rescue operation.

The Commissioner of Meerut Division Anita Meshram said that 17 people were killed in the incident. There were 38 to 40 people assembled under the roof. She said that rescue work is over now. Injured have been admitted to hospital.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed sorrow on the incident and has announced financial assistance of two lakh rupees each to the nearest kin of the each deceased. The Chief Minister has instructed Divisional Commissioner of Meerut and ADG Police Meerut Zone to inspect the incident site and submit a detailed report to the government. He said, all possible help will be provided to those affected by the incident. Governor Anandiben Patel has also expressed sorrow on the incident.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has also expressed grief over the incident. In a tweet, Mr Singh expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the incident. He also, prayed for the early recovery of the injured.
