Former Madhya Pradesh Directorate General of Police (DGP) Rishi Kumar Shukla has been appointed as the new chief of Central Bureau of Investigation CBI today.  Shukla was recently shifted to MP Police Housing Corporation.

Rishi Kumar Shukla is an IPS MP:83.  He has been appointed for a period of  2 years.

The Centre announced his name as next CBI chief, ignoring the objections raised by Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led selection committee, on the names of probable contenders proposed by the government.

The post of the CBI chief had been lying vacant since January 10 after the unceremonious exit of Alok Verma.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has, based on the panel recommended by the Committee constituted as per Section 4A(1) of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, approved the appointment of Shri Rishi Kumar Shukla, IPS(MP:1983) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) vice Shri Alok Kumar Verma, IPS(AGMU:1979), for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office”, govt said in a statement.

Verma had been engaged in a public feud with his deputy, Rakesh Asthana. Both, Verma and Asthana, had accused each other of corruption.

The two officers were removed from the office in a midnight coup.

M Nageswara Rao had been working as the interim CBI chief after Verma’s ouster.

The second meeting of the selection committee to choose the next chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) remained inconclusive on Friday after  Mallikarjun Kharge, declined to accept some names suggested by the government, people familiar with the development said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads the panel in which Kharge, as leader of the largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha, and chief justice Ranjan Gogoi are the other two members.

Senior IPS officers of 1984 batch, Javeed Ahmed, Rajni Kant Misra and SS Deswal, were also reported to be among the top contenders for the coveted post.
