President Ram Nath Kovind has said, the relation between India and Sri Lanka is unique and based on shared historical, cultural, ethnic and civilisational ties, and extensive people-to-people linkages.

During the meeting with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena in New Delhi, Mr Kovind said, both the countries must promote greater progress in trade, commerce, connectivity and development cooperation. Mr Kovind also praised Sri Lanka for taking several environment friendly measures including ‘Surya Bala Sangra Maya’ initiative in the solar energy sector.

The President said, political ties between India and Sri Lanka have gained momentum during the past three years. Lauding the efforts of the visiting President, Mr Kovind said, he played a stellar role in Sri Lanka’s active re-engagement with the world and his leadership has been reassuring for India and the region, and beyond.

Mr Maithripala has arrived in to New Delhi to participate in the International Solar Alliance Summit.
