Union Home Ministry today said the rain in current monsoon has battered six states, claiming 535 lives and leaving 188 injured, besides causing huge destruction of property.
According to the data, released by the Home Ministry in New Delhi, till today the states of Assam, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh were badly affected by this deluge, causing a great deal of distress in 94 districts.
So far, Maharashtra has received 99.3 mm of rainfall, badly affecting 26 districts. A total of 139 people have lost their lives and 117 have been injured. Three National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) teams with 106 rescuers and nine boats were pressed into relief operation.
Kerala has received 1452 mm of rain fall till July 19, leaving 126 dead and 39 injured. A total of 14,975 people in 2232 villages have been affected, who have been moved to 1770 relief camps, set up by the state government. The Home Ministry has provided them with LPG cylinders, LED bulbs and food items with the help of Central agencies.
Similarly, the state of West Bengal has so far received 171 mm of rainfall, which caused 116 deaths and left 19 injured. A total 161935 persons of 22 districts have been affected till now. The Centre has provided relief materials to them. Eight NDRF teams, consisting of 300 rescuers and 18 boats, have been pressed in relief operation.
Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh has been worst affected where 70 people lost their lives and 68 were injured in the heavy downpour. Seven NDRF teams with 16 boats are extending help to the district administration.
Till now, Gujarat has received 445 mm of rainfall which has affected 213 villages in 10 districts. 52 persons have lost their lives and 13 have been injured. The administration has evacuated 15912 persons. Nine NDRF teams along with 18 boats have been deployed in the relief mission.
Northeastern State of Assam has till now received 585.7 mm of rainfall which has affected the 21 districts of the state. A total of 1,228 villages have been hit by rains, affecting 10, 18,568 persons and leaving 34 dead so far.
Some close to 35,000 persons have been evacuated to 270 relief camps. The Centre has sent 12 NDRF teams and 27 boats for relief and rescue operation besides SDRF is deployed at 30 locations.
