Railways has ordered a high level inquiry into Mumbai’s Elphinston road suburban station footover bridge stampede this morning killing 22 people and injuring over 30.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said in Mumbai today that a complete ‘safety and capacity’ audit of all the Footover bridges across the suburban train network will be done. He said inquiry report on the incident will come within 10 days. The Minister also announced an ex gratia of 10 lakh rupees to the next of the kin of those who died in the incident.
The incident took place during an early rush hour.

“I have ordered a high level inquiry into the incident. I have also given an order of a complete safety and capacity audit of all Foot over-bridges across the Suburban train network as Mumbai has several such congested foot over-bridges”.
The Minister also announced an ex gratia of 10 lakh rupees to the next of the kin of those who died in the incident.
The State Government and Railways will give an ex-gratia of 5 lac rupees each to next to the kins. A compensation of 1 lac rupees will be given to the grievously injured person and fifty thousand rupees to those who suffered minor injuries in the incident.
The tragedy took place around 10.40 am when the foot over bridge, used by lakhs of people to commute to the commercial area with high-end corporate and media offices, was heavily crowded. Due to sudden heavy rains, people started gathering on the foot over bridge to take shelter. The injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal who was in Mumbai today, visited the KEM hospital and spoke to doctors about the treatment of the injured.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed condolences to those who have lost their lives in the incident.
