Just a few hours before the last phase of elections in Gujarat big row erupted over Congress president-elect Rahul Gandhi’s interviews to Gujarati news channels with the BJP coming under attack for trying to muzzle media.
Suggesting that the Election Commission should apply the same yardstick as applied to TV channels and Mr Gandhi, Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Randeep Singh Surjewala said the poll panel should also initiate action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his speech at FICCI on eve of Gujarat polls.
“If Rahul Gandhi’s interview to some TV channels was violation of code of conduct, the same yardstick should apply to Prime Minister Modi who made a political speech at FICCI meet while Finance Minister Arun Jaitley issued BJP’s Sankalp Patra on December 8, a day after campaign ended for first phase of polls,” Mr Surjewala told reporters.
“In 2014 elections, Modiji even showed BJP symbol on voting day but EC didn’t act. BJP held a press conference just before first phase of Gujarat election.
