Cambodians living outside the country have been protesting a general election that’s taking place without the main challenger to the ruling party.
Around 500 people gathered in Washington on Saturday to call the vote a sham.
Participants included senior members of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party. They fled the country last year for fear of arrest after the party was ordered to dissolve and banned from the election.
Protestors held banners and placards saying “Sunday’s election destroys democracy in Cambodia” and calling for the release of the CNRP president, who was arrested and jailed last year.
Party vice president Eng Chhai Eang was at the rally and told NHK that the international community should not accept the result of the election.
The party of Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power for more than 30 years, is expected to easily win the election.
