President Droupadi Murmu participated in “The Horta show” hosted by President Ramos Horta and interacted with Indian diaspora and friends of India at a community reception held in Dili, Timor Leste today. Both the countries reiterate their shared commitment to democracy and voicing the concerns of global south. Our correspondent covering the visit has filed this report.
President Droupadi Murmu participated in The Horta show, an informal public conversation hosted by President José Ramos Horta where both the Presidents talked about President Murmu rise from humble backgrounds to becoming the President of the largest democracy. Later, addressing the Indian diaspora in a community reception, President Murmu said that Indian diaspora across the world demonstrates the ethos of Vasduhaivaka Kutumbakam and becomes part of the growth story of the country they live in. She commended the Indian diaspora for their contribution to Timor Leste.
At the state banquet hosted in her honour, both the Presidents expressed confidence that with the reciprocal commencement of resident missions in New Delhi and Dili, the Delhi-Dili connect can be further leveraged for mutual benefit. President Horta commended India’s for moving 400 million people out of poverty in the last 20 years and sought India’s support in the field of Information technology and digital economy. While India welcomed the accession of Timor Leste to ASEAN in the coming months, Timor Leste reiterated it’s support for India’s claim for a permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council.
