President Pranab Mukherjee Friday called for reservation for women in Parliament, addressing a function in Chennai, Mr Mukherjee said, no society can call itself civilised, if it does not honour women.
He said despite equal rights, the representation of women in Lok Sabha is just 11.3 per cent against the global average of 22.8 per cent.
Mr. Mukherjee felt, role of women has not been recognised in the country’s growth, which reflects the attitude of discrimination of the society.
He said the contribution women make in the development of the country is unique.
The President said, it is really disturbing when news of brutalising of women appear day in and day out. The primary objective of civilisational values is to respect women, but still we have to walk miles to achieve it, he added.
