Tropical storm Jongdari has left at least 24 people injured in 8 prefectures across Japan

A powerful storm has hit central and western Japan, injuring over 24 people and cutting power to thousands of homes. Typhoon Jongdari brought torrential rain and winds of up to 180 kilometres an hour. Meteorological Agency officials said, the storm made landfall in Fukuoka Prefecture this evening.

Heavy rain and strong winds are likely to continue in the Shikoku and Kyushu regions as the storm is expected to slow down and linger off western Kyushu for some time. Country’s public broadcaster NHK reports that 150,000 homes are without power.

The agency has warned people to be prepared for landslides, overflowing rivers, floods in low-lying areas, high waves as storm surges.
Police initially said one man was missing, but they later confirmed that all the people in the vehicles had safely evacuated to higher ground.

Four more people were injured in Kanagawa.

Five people, including children, suffered minor injuries when high waves shattered a restaurant window in a seaside hotel in the city of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture on Saturday night.

Another person was injured in the prefecture.

Elsewhere, 3 were injured in Chiba Prefecture, 2 in Aichi, 3 in Mie, 2 in Osaka, and one in Nara.

One man was injured on Tokyo’s Miyake Island.
