Prime Minister Narendra Modi today visited Chennai to have an aerial view of the flood damage in the city. He arrived at the INS Rajkali naval base at Arakkonam, some 45 kilometer off Chennai by a special flight. From there, he will be inspecting the affected places by helicopter.

Over 1500 people are stranded at Chennai Airport as operations from both the terminals are shut down till Friday morning. Express train services originating from Chennai Egmore station is also suspended today. Suburban train services are truncated at Tambaram Station.

Bus services to the southern areas of the state is also hugely affected. Army troops dropped food packets from helicopters in and around Chennai where hundreds of residential areas are engulfed in water. Adyar and Cooum rivers in Chennai are in spate as huge quantities of surplus water is being released from Chemparampaakkam, Madhurantagam and Poondi reservoirs.
