Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to freedom activist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on his 51st death anniversary today. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, Veer Savarkar was a true patriot who envisioned a strong and developed India.
Born in 1883, Savarkar set up the Abhinav Bharat Society, during his college days and preached a revolutionary struggle against the British. While on a scholarship to Britain, Savarkar organised students and advocated an armed struggle to throw the British out of India and created a network of like-minded individuals.Revolutionary Savarkar had spent many years in the cellular jail in the Andamans.
