Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid homage to the brave individuals who resisted the Emergency and tirelessly worked towards strengthening the country’s democratic spirit.
In a tweet, Mr Modi termed it a dark period in history, emphasising its contrast to the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution. He said that these days will remain unforgettable.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur has denounced the Congress party’s imposition of the Emergency on this day in 1975.
In a tweet, the Minister stated that the Emergency left an indelible stain on Indian democracy. Highlighting the consequences of the Emergency, Mr Thakur expressed concern over millions of innocent people being jailed overnight.
He also condemned the restrictions imposed on freedom of the press and people’s freedom of expression during the period. He also extended his salutations to all those people who had raised their voices against the Emergency.
