Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched 84 smart projects from 20 cities in Pune on Saturday. On the occasion, Prime Minister Modi said Smart City project is not mere allocation of funds but a mass movement.
Mr. Modi asked people not to think urbanization as a problem but an opportunity. He further said cities can fight poverty and we should strengthen their capacity to fight the poverty.
The Smart City Mission’ projects which were launched today included 14 projects of Pune and 69 projects from 20 different cities in the country to be implemented at a cost of Rs. 1,770 crore.
These projects are related to solid waste management under Swachh Bharat Mission, water supply projects, sewage treatment plants and development of open and green spaces under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation.
It also includes housing projects for urban poor under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and area development and technology based pan-city solutions under Smart Cities Mission.
Mr. Modi also inaugurated ‘Make Your City SMART’ contest, aimed at involving citizens in designing smart cities. The prime minister also inaugurated ‘Smart Net Portal’ which enables the cities under different urban missions to share ideas and solutions for various issues during the implementation of various missions.
Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha, shared their ideas and progress about the mission in their respective states through video conferencing.
Union Minister of Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu said that Smart City Mission will fulfill people’s expectations. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadanvis said that the strength of smart city mission is in its inclusive character.
Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao, Union Minister of State for Environment, Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Babul Supriyo and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
