UN reforms, terrorism and trade figure in talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held bilateral talks with heads of several African nations during which UN reforms, combating challenge of terrorism and boosting trade and investment, particularly in oil and gas sector, figured prominently. Growing bilateral trade came up for discussion between Prime Minister Modi and African leaders.
The leaders stressed on the need to step up engagement in sectors like agriculture, IT, skill development, cyber security and maritime security.
Right from 9.30 in the morning till 5 in the evening, he remained busy in discussions with 19 Heads of African countries on several issues of mutual concern and global significance.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said the meetings were brief but structured. He said, the African leaders appreciated India’s development projects in the continent and sought deepening of ties in diverse sectors including health care, education and capacity building.
The spokesperson said, South African President Jacob Zuma strongly called for reform of global governance system saying the present system is outdated. Mr Zuma said it is important that all like minded countries come together to ensure reform of the United Nations.
Tomorrow, the third India Africa Forum Summit will open. Representatives of 54 African nations including heads of state and government of around 40 countries and African Union are likely to participate in the Summit.
The Prime Minister also met President of Zimbabwe, and Chairman of African Union Robert Mugabe. Both the leaders discussed issues of common interest, including UN reforms and the threat of terrorism.
