Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the Earthquake which occurred in Myanmar and Thailand today. In a social media post, Mr Modi prayed for the safety and well-being of the citizens of Myanmar and Thailand. He added that India stands ready to offer all possible assistance and asked the External Affairs Ministry to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.
A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar on Friday, followed by aftershocks of 6.4 and 4.9 magnitude within an hour. Tremors were also felt in Thailand, northeast India, and parts of China.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance.”
He further stated that he has instructed authorities to remain on standby and asked the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to stay in touch with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicentre was located 16 km northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) confirmed the depth, pinpointing the epicentre near Mandalay.
While no casualties have been reported yet, initial reports indicate significant damage. Buildings in Myanmar’s Mandalay region have collapsed, and several roads between Mandalay and Yangon are severely damaged. In Bangkok, the tremors triggered panic, causing people to evacuate buildings and rush to the streets.
Footage from affected areas shows dramatic scenes, including a skyscraper collapsing, forcing locals and workers to flee. In Laos’ capital, Vientiane, high-rise buildings swayed, alarming residents.
