Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the Sardar Sarovar Dam at Kevadia in Narmada district of Gujarat today.
Later, addressing a public meeting at Dabhoi in Vadodara district, the Prime Minister said lack of water resources has been a major factor in slowing the pace of development. He said the Project will be help full to bring prosperity among the people in new India.
Mr Modi said through this project the Narmada water will not only benefit the farmers Gujarat but also those from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajashan.
Mr Modi said, Sardar Sarovar Dam faced so many obstacles, but they were determined that the project will go on.
The Prime Minister said, the western part of India lacks adequate water supply and the eastern part is facing the shortage of electricity & gas supply. Mr Modi said his government is working to overcome these shortages so that both parts of India development and India scales new heights of development.
Remembering Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar on this occasion, Mr. Modi said that these two great man had a vision for prosperity of the country.
Mr. Modi said that Gujarat Government had successfully provided Narmada water to the BSF jawans on Kutch border by taking it 700 kilo meters away.
Mr Modi also hailed the tribal communities for their role in the project.
The Prime Minister, on the occasion, mentioning Statue of Unity said this tribute to Sardar Patel and will draw tourists from all over the world.
Mr Modi also remember Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, who died yesterday in New Delhi. He expressed his tributes to him.
Over 18 lakh hectares of land in the state will come under irrigation through the dam as Narmada water will start flowing to more than 9,000 villages of Gujarat through a network of canals.
The project will also help in supplying drinking water to about 4 crore people. The power generated from the dam will be shared among three states – Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The dam will irrigate 2.46 lakh hectares of land in Barmer and Jalore districts of Rajasthan.
Sardar Sarovar project is the biggest dam in terms of volume of concrete used in it. It is also the second biggest dam in the world after the Grand Coulee Dam in the United States.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said, Sardar Sarovar Dam is the best gift to the people of Gujarat by the Prime Minister on his birthday today.
Mr Modi will also address the famers rally at Amreli in Saurashtra in the afternoon.
