modiPrime Minister Narendra Modi today called for a debate on internal democracy in political parties, asserting that development of true democratic spirit within the political parties is necessary for the country’s future and democracy.

In his address during Deepawali Mangal Milan programme at BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Mr Modi urged all to make democracy within the political parties a subject of debate as people are not aware of the structure of the parties, their ideologies and functioning.

He pointed out that funding to political parties is often debated but not their values, ideologies, internal democracy and how they give opportunities to the new generation of leaders.

Mr Modi also praised the media for its support to Swachh Bharat Mission, saying it has spoken in one voice over the issue. He said, the country has still a long way to go to achieve international standards of cleanliness but the campaign has built an atmosphere in its favour.

In his remarks, BJP chief Amit Shah noted that Diwali marks the beginning of the new year in Gujarat and said the country has met various challenges successfully during the last year and moved ahead under the Modi government. He said the nation is entering the new year with a lot of positivity.

Mr Modi and Mr Shah also interacted with media person during the event.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani and others Union Ministers and senior party leaders were also present on the occasion.
