Prime minister Narendra Modi, who reached on a two day visit to Kazakhstan today to participate in the 17th Shanghai cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, met country’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The Prime Minister will address the SCO summit tomorrow and is expected to meet Chinese President Xi, Jinping. AIR correspondent reports that twenty year old city Astana is hosting powerful world leaders Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The highlight of this year’s SCO summit will be the formal accession of India and Pakistan to the SCO.The joining of New Delhi and Islamabad, the first ever expansion of the SCO, will make it an eight-member regional organization that covers three-fifths of the Eurasian continent with nearly half of the world’s population.

But here in Astana there is only one talking point. Whether Prime minister will meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif or not . Modi and Sharif broke protocol to meet in Paris at the climate change summit in 2015. Astana may be another turning point in the relationship between the two countries.

Earlier, SCO secretary-General Rashid Alimov said that the membership of India and Pakistan, both regional heavyweights, will enhance the SCO’s role in combating cross-border terrorism and promoting free trade.
