Even as Lathi charge at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) students particularly on girls in Varanasi taking political storm, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah Monday spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and urged him to resolve the issue at the earliest.
“Both PM Modi and BJP president Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Minister,” BJP leader Nitin Gadkari said. Yogi Adityanath is in the national capital in connection with the BJP’s National Executive Meet. All BJP Chief Ministers – who are members of the party’s second highest policy making body – are attending the meeting.
A number of students, including women, and journalists were reportedly injured in a lathi-charge by the police in the Banaras Hindu University in Prime Minister’s Parliamentary constituency where a protest on Saturday night against an alleged eve-teasing incident turned violent and out of control. Police officials reportedly blamed students saying some of them tried to set campus property on fire – the charge was – however – denied by the students. Mr Shah and a few other BJP leaders, according to sources, feel the UP government and police could have handled the situation better.
