Addressing the closing ceremony of Diamond Jubilee year of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics here, Dr. Singh said that the nuclear energy would play an important role in India quest for clean and environment friendly energy to push forward development process.

“I am convinced that nuclear energy will  play an important role in our quest for a clean and environmentally friendly energy mix as a major locomotive programme,” PM said

The Prime Minister said that his government was in the process to expand the civil nuclear energy programme and also asked the scientific community to enhance the safety of nuclear reactors.

Dr. Singh said that higher investment in research and development should be accorded high priority across the economy to attract more youngsters towards science and research.

Referring to the contribution of Prof. Meghnath Saha in country’s advancement in science, the Prime Minister said: “It is our collective duty to identify young talent, train them well and provide them an environment which is conducive to advanced research and discovery”. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee also spoke on the occasion.
