Parliament on Monday took up the discussion on Motion of Thanks on President Ram Nath Kovind’s address to the joint sitting of both the Houses. Moving the motion in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Pratap Chandra Sarangi highlighted the success of several developmental initiatives and schemes by the Narendra Modi led government.

He highlighted the positive atmosphere created by the Modi Government by introducing the Direct Benefit Transfer in various schemes. He said, the President’s address is a reflection to the conviction and commitment of Modi government.

He said the people across the country have reposed faith and given a huge mandate to Modi government. BJP MP Heena Gavit seconded the motion moved by Pratap Chandra Sarangi.

Initiating the discussion on Motion of Thanks, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that the NDA government has only renamed the schemes launched by the earlier UPA government. He also took on the government on issues of economy and unemployment. He said the Congress during its rule brought green revolution to increase the foodgrain production and also enacted the Food Security Act.

T R Baalu of DMK accused the government of not delivering on the promises made by it during 2014 general elections. Sougata Roy of TMC raised the issues of mob lynching and EVMs, unemployment rate and state of PSUs.

Mithun Reddy of YSRCP reminded the government of implementing the provisions made in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. Members belonging to other parties including BJD, BSP, JD(U) and TRS participated in the discussion.

In the Rajya Sabha, BJP working President and Rajya Sabha Member J P Nadda moved the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address. Mr Nadda said, the government is moving on the right track and the mandate reflects it. Elaborating various measures taken by the government, Mr Nadda said, in the international arena, India was once upon a time a mere spectator, and now it is a player. He suggested the opposition not to oppose only for the sake of disagreement.

Seconding the motion, Sampatiya Uike of BJP said that every government tried to do something for the poor, but what the Modi government did is visible.

Initiating the debate, leader of the opposition and Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad demanded to conduct immediate Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir which is under President Rule. He accused the NDA government of weakening the cooperative federal structure in the last five years. He suggested the government to focus on employment generation and economic growth of the country.
