Palestine Prime Minister, Rami al-Hamdallah today chaired his first meeting of the cabinet in Gaza in a move towards reconciliation between the mainstream Fatah party and Islamist group Hamas. The reconciliation process, which is beginning with the cabinet session, was promoted by Egypt and other US-allied Arab countries.
Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have been ruled separately since the rift erupted in violence in 2007.Hamas announced last week that it was handing over administrative control of the Gaza Strip to a unity government headed by Rami al-Hamdallah.
Hamas, considered a terrorist group by Israel and the West, last month disbanded its Gaza shadow government, after Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates imposed an economic boycott on its main donor, Qatar.
