Newly elected AIADMK Legislature Party Leader Edappadi K Palaniswami today met governor Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan in Chennai and staked claim to form the government.
In a brief meeting with the Governor, Mr Palaniswami presented a list of MLAs supporting his claim. Sources said, some senior leaders and ministers also accompanied him.
Mr Palaniswami was elected AIADMK Legislature Party leader today replacing V K Sasikala shortly after the Supreme Court convicted her in the disproportionate assets case.
The AIADMK MLAs who were lodged in the beach side resort at Kuvathur near Chennai had an emergency meeting this morning and elected Mr Palaniswamy as their leader. They also removed care taker chief minister O.Panneerselvam, minister K.Pandiarajan and 18 other key leaders of the party from its primary membership.
Meanwhile, Panneerselvam deputed two of his emissaries, Rajya Sabha member Dr Maitreyan and former member Paul Manoj Pandian to meet the Governor to present his case. The response from the Raj Bhavan to both the factions is being awaited.
The Governor has meanwhile summoned the state Director General of Police and Chennai Police Commissioner, seemingly to discuss about the prevailing law and order situation in the state.
