Obama declared that “justice has been done” as he disclosed that American military and C.I.A. operatives had finally cornered Bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda who had eluded them for nearly a decade, and shot him to death at a compound in Pakistan.
“For over two decades, Bin Laden has been Al Qaeda’s leader and symbol,” the president said in a statement carried on television around the world. “The death of Bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat Al Qaeda. But his death does not mark the end of our effort.” He added, “We must and we will remain vigilant at home and abroad.”
Bin Laden is dead and his body is in US custody, said as crowds outside White House chanted ‘USA, USA’.
Giving details of the operation, Obama said last week he determined that “we had enough intelligence to take action and authorised an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.”Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan”.
Abbottabad is about 150 kms north of Islamabad. “I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children,” Obama said in his address from the White House.
After the news of Osama death, there were instant celebrations in Washington, outside the White House, and New York where the twin-tower terrorist strike happened 10 years ago killing over 3000 people.
Meanwhile according to a Pakistani TV report a helicopter crashed near Abbottabad city in northwest Pakistan during an operation by US Special Forces that resulted in the killing of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden. Pakistani TV news channels reported that the military helicopter burst into flames after crashing into the compound of a house near Bilal Town area near Abbottabad, a short distance from the Pakistan Military Academy. Reports said that two other helicopters participated in the operation during which some persons were killed and several foreign nationals, including women and children, were detained. There was however, no official word on the development.
