Amid the uproar and adjournments in the Lower House, the Opposition parties led by the Congress submited a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today (February 10, 2026).

Members of the Opposition parties submitted a notice of resolution seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla under Article 94(c) of the Constitution of India, alleging that he has conducted the proceedings of the House in a partisan manner.

In the notice, the signatories claim that leaders of Opposition parties have repeatedly been denied opportunities to speak in Parliament, which they describe as a violation of their democratic rights.

Citing recent instances, the Opposition stated that on 2 February 2026, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to complete his speech during the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address. They alleged that such restrictions on the Leader of the Opposition have become frequent.

The notice also refers to the suspension of eight Opposition Members of Parliament on 3 February 2026 for the entire Budget Session, describing the action as arbitrary and punitive.

Additionally, the signatories alleged that on 4 February 2026, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP was permitted to make objectionable and personal remarks against two former Prime Ministers without reprimand. According to the Opposition, no action was taken despite their objections.

The Opposition has argued that these incidents undermine the impartiality and dignity of the Speaker’s office and has formally moved for consideration of the resolution by the House.

Interestingly, 125 opposition members have signed the notice of removal but notable absentee is no TMC leaders have signed.

Senior leaders who have signed the letter including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav, T R Balu, Venugopal and others.
