SHILLONG: Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that North East has a special place in ‘our hearts’ and it could be made as “Heaven of Peace” leading to prosperity and development in the region.
Expressing satisfaction over peace talks with different militant groups Chidambaram said government was prepared to extend its hand of friendship to any group that wanted to hold talks.
Chidambaram was addressing the passing out parade of the North East Police Academy on the outskirts of the city. He said he was happy to report that almost all groups or organisations had been in talks with government-appointed interlocutors. He said, a little more effort, a give-and-take attitude and more understanding can help address all issues.
Meanwhile Chimdambaram ruled out redrawing Manipur’s boundary. He said, peace is coming in North-East as insurgent groups are coming forward for peace talks. Addressing students at the G P Women’s College in Imphal, the Union Home Minister said, sexual harassment of North-East girls in New Delhi is highly condemnable. He said, specially targeting the girls of this region is an opportunistic crime. He also assured that those involved in such inhuman activities will be given severest punishment.
Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said, the next few years will be an era of reconciliation for making the North-East India a heaven of peace and prosperity. He said, peace is coming in North-East including Manipur as most of the insurgent groups bleeding for separatism in this region are coming for peaceful negotiations with the government. Union Home Minister also appealed to all underground organizations to shun the path of violence and come forward for peace dialogue. He also committed that Centre will fully honour and respect the proscribed outfits coming for the peace process.
